How Weighted Grades Are Calculated

Instructors typically allocate higher percentages of your total course grade to comprehensive evaluations—such as midterms, laboratory projects, and final examinations—while homework and weekly quizzes carry smaller weights.

In a point system, your grade is simply total earned points divided by total possible points (e.g., earning 450 out of 500 points equals 90%). In a percentage system (weighted grade), assignments belong to categories with fixed percentage weights regardless of total points. Worked Step-by-Step Example
Suppose your syllabus defines the following four grading components for a 100-point course:
- Homework: 95% score (Weight: 20%) → 95 × 0.20 = 19.0 points
- Quizzes: 85% score (Weight: 20%) → 85 × 0.20 = 17.0 points
- Midterm Exam: 78% score (Weight: 30%) → 78 × 0.30 = 23.4 points
- Final Project: 90% score (Weight: 30%) → 90 × 0.30 = 27.0 points

How to Calculate the Final Exam Score You Need

- Remaining weight fraction before final:
